This four-title event is followed by a panel discussion on Turkish cinema moderated by film critic Peter Keough.

Hermana

Directed by Enver Arcak (2017, 28 min.). Digital. In Turkish with English subtitles.

Winner of the Best Documentary Audience Award.

One of the earliest Jewish communities in Anatolia is located in Ankara. Its history goes back to the 2nd century BC. After the migrations in the 15th century from Spain and Portugal, and later from Germany and other European countries in the early 20th century, the community has reached its highest numbers. The documentary tells the untold story of this community through interviews, diaries, and family photographs.

Co-presented with the Boston Jewish Film Festival.

Yakup and his younger brother Bedo travel to another village every day for school. Yakup’s notebook is out of blank pages, and they desperately search for a new notebook.

Scrabble

Directed by Merve Gezen (2016, 20 min.). Digital. In Turkish with English subtitles.

Winner of the Best Short Film Jury Award.

Four women of different social and economic circumstances meet to play Scrabble. They reflect on their tragic endings and shout their destinies to the Scrabble board.
